DUALITY: Dance Ballet of India
NEW DATE: Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 4pm
The date for this event was changed from Sunday, March 19, 2017 to Saturday, April 1, 2017. Original tickets will be honored on the new date.
Portland's dance maven and renowned choreographer Jayanthi Raman brings an illustrious team of international dancers and musicians to the Newmark Theatre for an evening of musical dance theatre.
With an international cast of professional dancers from Delhi, Chennai and the U.S., the performance features Indian dance forms Bharatha Natyam and the martial arts-based dance form Chhau, as well as local Modern dancers in an elegant contemporary dance production.
The original music has been composed by young Mandolin maestro U. Rajesh, and features the voice of Bollywood melody king Hariharan and world class percussionists Selvaganesh and S.V. Ramani. The story line, penned by local author Lalitha Ram, is about young maiden Padmini who moves from her hometown Kanyakumari, in South India, to Portland, Oregon, and the challenges and triumphs she deals with as an immigrant in the U.S. Adapting some real life experiences from families around us, the dance production showcases a realistic description of events happening locally.
Referred as the "Gold Standard of Indian dance in the Northwest," Jayanthi Raman blazes the dance scene with her virtuoso performances and award winning choreography. From NEFA-NDP to Oregon Arts Commission’s Fellowship, and many more accolades, the artists lends herself to the gracious physical representation of music through the visual dynamic medium of contemporary Indian dance.
This project has been funded in part by the prestigious Creative Heights grant from the Oregon Arts Commission.
