James "Blood" Ulmer

James "Blood" Ulmer is a legendary harmolodic jazz and blues guitarist and vocalist originally from South Carolina whose career has spanned five decades. He first recorded with organist Hank Marr in 1964, and after moving to New York in 1971, Ulmer played with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Joe Henderson, Paul Bley, Rashied Ali and Larry Young. Subsequently, Ulmer joined Ornette Coleman; he was the first electric guitarist to record and tour extensively with Coleman. Ulmer would then go onto release a string of critically acclaimed albums that remain classics to this day, including Tales of Captain Black, Are You Glad to Be in America?, Memphis Blood, America Do You Remember the Love?, Bad Blood in the City, and Odyssey.

Over the years, Ulmer has recorded or collaborated with Arthur Blythe, Pharaoh Sanders, James Carter, John Zorn, Reggie Workman, The Roots and many others. Recently, Ulmer has now become recognized as an elder statesman of the blues. In this for-Portland-only occasion, Ulmer will sing and play electric guitar where his distinctive and idiosyncratic playing style will conjure up sounds that recall Skip James, Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Mississippi Fred McDowell and everything in between while transcending genres and age.

"Extremely appealing...his singing has a charismatic growl that suits his overtly bluesy effusions perfectly. Mr. Ulmer has managed a most convincing fusion of the clear-cut structures of the song form with the freer energies of Colemanesque polytonality." – The New York Times
