RIGOLETTO BEGINS WITH A JOKE AND ENDS WITH A CORPSE.
One fateful day, the course of Rigoletto’s life changes forever.
So there’s this philandering Duke in Mantua, a town in northern Italy. He likes to sleep around and he isn’t particular. The Duke’s aria, “Questa o Quella” literally means, “This one or that one.” And as if deflowering the ladies of Mantua wasn’t enough, the Duke employs a court jester to mock anyone who complains. The jester, Rigoletto, is a clown in public, but in private he is a doting father, dedicated to protecting his daughter from the mean streets of Mantua. However, when a father defending the honor of his daughter puts a curse on the court jester, comedy turns to tragedy.
Sung in Italian with English text projected above the stage.
The performance of Rigoletto on May 6 at 2pm will include a live audio-description of the visual and physical events on-stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision.
Season subscriptions available from Portland Opera.
