Noontime Showcase: Ne Plus Ultra Jass Orchestra

The Ne Plus Ultra Jass Orchestra was formed in January of 2016 as the brainchild of Ron Hayes, KJ McElrath, and Sammuel Murry-Hawkins. The trio recognized the lack of fully orchestrated traditional dance bands in the Pacific Northwest focusing on the sweet and hot music of the 1920s and 30s.

With over 500 charts in their collective collection, the orchestra is creating a repertoire that reflects some of the most familiar music from the era, as well as lost gems that shall sparkle once more.

The instrumentation for The Ne Plus Ultra Jass Orchestra is a perfect representation of the lush hotel bands of a forgotten era. With tuba, banjo, reed quartet, trombone, 2 coronets, violin, percussion, and piano, the orchestra is the only of its kind in the Portland Metropolitan area. Our male vocalists, The Tritone Trio, complete the illusion of an era of elegance past.

Our name is derived from the Latin phrase "Ne Plus Ultra," translated as "no more beyond," or more colloquially, "above all else." The phrase was adopted by instrument artisans in the early decades of the twentieth century to represent their top of the line models.

This is the last of nine weekly, free Noontime Showcase performances as part of Summer Arts on Main, which feature a wide variety of performers and styles. Suitable for all ages.

Noontime Showcase & Summer Arts on Main

During the summer months, Noontime Showcase—a monthly free performance held inside Antoinette Hatfield Hall during most of the year—moves out to Main Street and changes to a weekly schedule. This Noontime Showcase is part of the 2018 Summer Arts on Main series, which runs 11am to 2pm every Wednesday, July 11th through September 5th, with free performances and children’s activities.

Summer Arts on Main Street runs concurrently with the Portland Farmers Market in the adjacent park blocks (Shemanski Park at Park Ave. & Main St.).  The vegetables for our "Veggie Derby" have been generously donated by the Portland Farmers Market!

Located outside on SW Main Street, between SW Broadway & Park Ave.- next to Antoinette Hatfield Hall, 1111 SW Broadway Ave., Portland, OR 97205.

In the event of rain, or extreme heat, this event will take place in the Antoinette Hatfield Hall rotunda.
