Stumptown Stages

Welcome to Stumptown Stages 10th Anniversary Season!

Ten years ago, feeling we could help fill a void in local theatre, we launched a not for profit theatre company featuring musicals only. The recession hit. Like most Arts Organizations it was a struggle to progress. Costs rose, venues were not always available.  Fortunately, as time passed, many volunteers gave their time, loyal audience support followed us. Portland’5 Centers for the Arts made our venue dream a reality. With the help of our wonderful Sponsors and Individual Donors we have gradually added more musicals to our season, an education department, and are developing new musical works from creative teams in the Portland area.

It seems fitting that we celebrate our 10th year with musicals that affirm life, hopes and dreams in our wonderful and varied American culture.

Our Anniversary Season opens on October 16th, 2014 with 110 in the Shade, recipient of five 2007 Tony Award nominations including Best Revival of a Musical.110 in the Shade features the award winning composing team of The Fantasticks and a wonderfully engaging script based on The Rainmaker. Next up is You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, featuring the Peanuts gang in what the New York Times called “a miracle” of a show. We then return to Bedford Falls with the Stumptown original musical of It’s A Wonderful Life. Winner of 9 Portland Area Musical Theatre Awards, It’s A Wonderful Life has become a holiday tradition with Portland audiences! Also on the season is Ruthless! The Musical. Winner of the 1993 New York Outer Critics Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, this musical gave birth to the talents of Natalie Portman and Britney Spears. Ruthless! The Musical is a clever farce that parodies everything from The Children’s Hour, Valley of the Dolls, Gypsy and All About Eve. We close our Anniversary Season with the world premiere of Soul Harmony. Soul Harmony follows the story of Deborah Chessler, Sonny Til, and the Orioles, whose song “It’s Too Soon To Know” became a touchstone and launching pad for the rhythm and blues explosion of the late 1940s and 1950s. Soul Harmony features De’Sean Dooley (grandson of Sonny Til) in the title role, with musical compositions by Portland’s own Michael Allen Harrison.

Thank you for your support of Stumptown Stages!
